5 Signs You’re Not Just Tired – You’re Burnt Out

Burnout, Stress & Anxiety Counselling in Mornington Peninsula Most people assume burnout is simply being very busy. It isn’t.

Burnout develops when stress becomes prolonged and the nervous system does not get enough opportunity to recover. You may still be working, parenting, exercising and meeting expectations, yet internally your system remains on alert. Over time, that chronic activation becomes exhausting.

When the body stays in a heightened stress response for too long, stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline remain elevated. Sleep becomes lighter, rest feels less restorative, and emotional regulation becomes harder. What looks like tiredness on the surface is often nervous system overload underneath.

Here are five signs the fatigue you are experiencing may be burnout rather than just a busy period.

1. Rest no longer restores you

You are getting enough hours of sleep, but you wake feeling flat or heavy. Mornings require effort. Coffee feels necessary rather than enjoyable. By the time you are driving to work, your mind is already running through the day ahead.

When the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of activation, the body struggles to shift fully into recovery mode overnight. Even days off can feel tense, as your thoughts drift quickly toward the upcoming week rather than settling into rest.

If downtime does not feel restorative, it is often a sign that the system has not properly powered down.

2. Your patience is noticeably thinner

Small frustrations land harder than they used to. Traffic feels intolerable. Emails feel loaded. A simple request from your partner or child triggers a sharper response than intended.

Afterwards, there is often guilt or self-criticism. Underneath the irritability is usually care and depletion.

From a physiological perspective, when stress is prolonged, the brain’s capacity for emotional regulation reduces. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for measured responses and perspective, becomes less effective when the nervous system is overloaded. Irritability is therefore not a character flaw; it is often an early behavioural sign of burnout.

3. You find yourself fantasising about escape

You may not hate your job or your family life, yet you catch yourself imagining what it would be like to walk away. There is a growing desire for space where no one needs anything from you.

These thoughts are rarely about wanting a completely different life. More often, they reflect a nervous system seeking relief from sustained pressure. When responsibilities accumulate without adequate recovery, the mind begins scanning for exits.

Longing for escape is often a signal that capacity has been exceeded.

4. Your body is carrying the strain

Burnout frequently shows up physically. Headaches, jaw tension, tight shoulders, chest discomfort, nausea before meetings, shallow breathing or digestive changes are common.

Stress that is not processed or discharged does not simply disappear; it remains in the body. Over time, chronic activation can lead to ongoing muscular tension and a heightened stress baseline. These symptoms are not “just in your head.” They are genuine physiological responses to prolonged strain.

The body often speaks before the mind fully acknowledges what is happening.

5. Your mood has flattened

There is less joy than there used to be. Creativity and motivation drop. Decisions feel harder. Activities that once felt meaningful now feel neutral or effortful.

From the outside, life may appear functional. Responsibilities are still being met. But internally, it feels more like surviving than engaging.

Burnout tends to build gradually rather than dramatically. It often presents as a slow fading of energy and connection, rather than a sudden collapse.
